Two GEM Teachers Selected for Mary Hoffman Distinguished Teacher Award

Glenbard East is proud of Mrs. May and Mr. Heise, who were BOTH selected for the Mary Hoffman Distinguished Teacher Award by the Illinois Music Educators Association. This is an award given annually to recognize outstanding music teachers in the state of Illinois. This is the first time in the award’s history that it has been given to two teachers from the same school. Bravo and congratulations to both Mr. Heise and Mrs. May for this recognition of their celebrated careers.

These students competed by sending recordings of their performances to the University of Illinois and being selected from schools throughout the Midwest. They will perform at the Robert Allerton House in Monticello, IL on April 18 and 19, 2008.

String Teaching Book Just Released

Joanne May, Music Department Chair at Glenbard East, has edited a new publication by Meredith Music Publications entitled The String Teacher's Cookbook: Creative Recipes for a Successful Program. This new work, fourth in the cookbook series, is a stimulating collection of unique concepts on becoming a successful teacher/performer by 57 of today's most outstanding string professionals. It contains to-the-point, thought provoking ideas proven successful by master teacher-performers. Included are problem-solving tips, philosophical concepts, and technique-building exercises, all in one easy-to-read collection. It is an ideal source of exciting strategies for all levels of development. Royalties from this project are being donated to the American String Teachers Association, a non-profit association dedicated to advancing string education. ASTA serves more than 11,500 members from throughout the string profession, providing a vast array of services and support to string educators and performers.

2001 Glenbard East Graduate Appointed to Toronto Symphony

Julie Barnes Spring, Glenbard East 2001 graduate, has recently been named Principal Harpist for the Toronto Symphony. Julie competed with hundreds of harpists nationwide for the postion. There are very few full time harp positions in the world, and the market is highly competitive.
Julie Barnes Spring has been performing in the Chicagoland area for many years. Originally from Lombard, IL, she has recently finished her Bachelors degree from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY, and is pursuing her Master's degree in Orchestral Studies at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University, Chicago, IL. Teachers include Kathleen Bride, Professor of Harp, Eastman School, and Sarah Bullen, Principal Harp, Chicago Symphony.
Julie has enjoyed performing with various festivals and also a number of orchestras in Chicago and throughout the suburbs. The Civic Orchestra of Chicago is one of the groups with which she performs regularly, and she serves as a substitute for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. American String Teachers State Workshop

This photo album includes pictures of the "Jackson 4" String Quartet of Glenbard East High School performing at the American String Teachers Association State Conference on Oct. 28, 2007 at VanderCook College of Music. They were coached by internationally acclaimed violin pedagogue, Sally O'Reilly. Dr. O'Reilly is Professor of Violin at the University of Minnesota.

Two Former Glenbard East Students Named in Civic Orchestra Positions

Harpist, Julie Barnes Spring (class of 2000) and violinist, Samantha May (class of 2002) were recently named as members of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago for the 2007-2008 season. Auditions for membership are highly competitive and take place in several cities in February and March each year. The age range of members is 22 to 30.
Winners were announced in April, and the season begins in September. All major performances are held at Symphony Center in Chicago.
About Civic Orchestra of Chicago
Young artists seek membership in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago to train in becoming professional orchestral musicians. As the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Civic benefits from a musical alliance that is unique among major American orchestras.
Under the guidance of Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot, the program features a progression of sectionals (coached by CSO musicians), split and tutti rehearsals that are intense and in-depth; players are challenged at their highest artistic level. Civic musicians also have the opportunity to perform in workshops and masterclasses with renowned guest artists such as Yo-Yo- Ma and Mitsuko Uchida.
